Explosions Add Second Show At Trocadero Theater !

One of our fav bands of all time, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY sold out their April show at The Starlight Ballroom way in advance and of course they should have, as they are quite possibly the best American instrumental band out there these days.

We are very happy to announce that they have added a second Philadelphia date! (yessssssssss!). The second show will be taking place on Thursday April 10th at The Trocadero Theater. Tickets are on sale now – get them quick as these guys have (and deservingly so) a very rabid and loyal fan base. Explosions will be playing two separate sets in two different venues and settings (they way it should be when bands play two shows in a city). So expect a healthy dose of new and material spread out over both shows.

The first show is still first sold out, but tickets are still only $12 (cheap!) to see the second show at The Trocadero on Thursday April 10th. The show is still all ages and will have a full bar for those who are over 21+ and like to drink. You can purchase tickets online now or at any ticketmaster box office location (including the trocadero box office to avoid surcharge fees)

CAN WE PLEASE ACT LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE - 2007 NEW YEARS PARTY !

It's almost that time of year when we have our annual super crazy (and affordable) new years party. They really are fun, ask anyone who has been to one. Anyways Dave P from Making Time is much better at this stuff so I will let him describe it (ps. check out that balloon drop from two years ago - we have even more for this year)

From Dave P

Ahhhhh......So, here we are and yet another year has passed. So much has happened in 2007 and our world has changed in so many wany ways.

How might you ask??? Well, here we go.....

Philadelphia's favorite sons and *Making Time New Year's Eve Freakout* 2006(7) Alumni Man Man had a song featured on a Nike commercial this year. The Philadelphia Phillies won the National League East title in the final game of the season. Superstar DJ Diplo changed his name to The Dipper following recommendations from his friends, colleagues and 2manydjs. The artist behind Ed Banger T-shirts, Justice record covers and videos for Justice remixed Simian tracks produced a video for the very man that once cursed him at the MTV 2006 European Video Awards.....Kanye West (Kanye was very bummed when he lost best video award to SO ME for his video for We Are Your Friends), and that very man, Kanye, sampled a Daft Punk song to make his most recent single Stronger and asked Peter Bjorn and John to be his live backing band.....*WHAT THE F%#K!!!*

Philadelphia officially changed it's name to Killadelphia once it's murder rate matched the number of days in a calender year (and Kele from Bloc Party said his friends in London called Philadelphia Killadelphia upon his last visit here). Sean Agnew of R5 Productions took a vacation to Dubai, grew a beard and got his picture taken with Vincent Gallo. I started a DJ night at Philadelphia's premiere gay club, Woodys, and now have a gay club only booking policy. Mike Z of Making Time became a vegetarian and learned how to magically reverse the aging process so that he now looks 21. Adam Sparkles of Making Time started wearing fashionable glasses and thus was named Sexiest Barista of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine and his place of work, the Famous Last Drop Coffeehouse, was featured, along with other Philadelphia establishments, in Rolling Stone magazine's 2007 "HOT LIST". Jaysun Musson of Philadelphia's controversial rap group Plastic Little and one of Philadelphia's Most Desirable Bachelors started working at that very same coffee shop this year and recently decided to not show up to work for a week due to a Sci-Fi channel Star Wars Marathon and as a result is no longer employed there...now that's hip-hop. Julian S. Process changed his DJ name to Pink Skull and has become a Mexican food critic for the Philadelphia Weekly.....he highly recommends El Jarocho in South Philadelphia. The Broadzilla Djs left Upstairs at Sals and now only play the European festival circuit and Frat parties. The Rock Tits DJ's traded their button down cowboy shirts for elaborate neck wear which they of course wear.....*SHIRTLESS*. Bands that could barely sell out the Khyber are asking for $20,000.00 to play shows on New Year's Eve and last but not least.....Cocaine has replaced Sparks as Philadelphia's favorite party facilitator.

*WOAH.....WHAT A CRAZY YEAR!!!*

Yes, so much has changed in just one year but, amidst all of this radical change you can always count on one thing to stay strong and persevere throughout these tumultuous times.....

WE ARE THROWING A PARTY ON NEW YEAR'S EVE AND IT'S GOING TO BE CRAZY!!!

YES!!! ALTHOUGH SO MUCH HAS CHANGED OVER THE PAST YEAR, ONE THING STILL REMAINS THE SAME...THERE WILL BE, FOR THE 4TH YEAR IN A ROW, YET ANOTHER *MAKING TIME NEW YEAR'S EVE FREAKOUT!!!* YES IT WILL BE OPEN BAR ALL NIGHT LONG!!! YES IT WILL BE THE BEST NEW YEAR'S PARTY IN AMERICA!!! AND YES IT WILL AGAIN, FOR THE 4TH YEAR IN A ROW, BE THE BEST NEW YEAR'S OF YOUR....

*LIFE!!!*

PHILADELPHIA!?!?!?!?!? IF THERE WERE EVER A REASON TO FREAK OUT LIKE A CRAZY PERSON MORE THAN EVER BEFORE IT IS THIS!!! *THE MAKING TIME NEW YEAR'S EVE FREAKOUT* HAS BEEN THE RADDEST, MOST AMAZING PARTY OF THE YEAR FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS AND I HAVE NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT IT WILL BE THE RADDEST F#%KING PARTY OF 2007 AS WELL!!!
HOLY S#%T PHILADELPHIA, ARE WE IN THIS ALONE...OR ARE WE IN THIS.....*TOGETHER*?!?!?!?
*TOGETHER*, CAN WE PLEASE MAKE THIS THE BEST F#%KING NEW YEAR'S EVE EVER!?!?!?!
*TOGETHER*...CAN WE GET RADDER THAN WE HAVE EVER GOTTEN BEFORE!?!?!?!

*TOGETHER*...CAN WE FREAKOUT LIKE CRAZY PEOPLE MORE THAN EVER BEFORE!?!?!?!

Punk Rock Flea Market Date Moved

There was a double booking / date issue at the Starlight Ballroom rather than have the Flea Market a big giant mess or move the flea market up one date. We decided to move it to the following week on Saturday December 22nd.

Obviously this is less than ideal for many people but after some conversations with a few sellers and the staff - it was decided the new date would be on Sat Dec 22nd. Same date / time / place / details.

If you purchased a table and the new date does not work for you – we will gladly refund all of the fees and costs from the table rental (hit us up on e-mail as soon as possible) .

We are really upset about this – we count on this just as much as you do, but there wasn't much we could do (trust us on this). We have the full seller listings posted online right now at : http://www.r5productions.com/prfm.html

Starlight Has Reopened - It's Official !

That's right - everyone's favorite "larger" Philadelphia venue has reopened! I just got back from the signing of all the documents - it's official. After playing host to bands such as Mogwai, Sonic Youth, Animal Collective (well that was a satanic rave to be fair), Sleater Kinney, The Boredoms and the above pictured Girl Talk (among man many other bands) - the Starlight was shut down for about a month due to concerns from the City of Philadelphia after they rented out their facility to known criminal "boss" type figure. Well some less than pleasant activities took place after the party that evening and the city hosted a series of investigations and meetings with the owner.

We are happy to announce that as of 2PM the Starlight is back open for business. WOOOOO! Our first show back there will be this Friday Nov 16th with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. So fuck what ya' heard! Starlight is 100% fully open for business. All scheduled show will be 100% fully happening !

See you guys at the shows !

The Holiday Edition Of The Punk Rock Flea Market Announced

So after 37826387631231232 e-mails came in asking us about when the annual HOLIDAY EDITION of the Punk Rock Flea Market was taking place - I am happy to announce that it will be taking place on Sunday (our first Sunday ever!) December 16th at The Starlight Ballroom.

This time we'll have guest DJs throughout the day and even a video shoot! As usual doors will open up at 10am (get there early thats when the great stuff gets snatched up!) and will remain open till 5pm. Food (including a new veggie burger!) and drink will be served throughout the day.

We are now taking table reservations (online at r5productions.com) to people selling their old "junk" - as in pre-owned items they would like to part with (such as old records, t-shirts, musical equipment, electronics, furniture etc). For those who wish to sell new or handcrafted items that you make on your own please see below for more details.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING IF YOU PLAN ON RESERVING A TABLE :

1) For the first fourteen days (nov 9th to nov 23rd) we are ONLY allowing registration for peoples old "items" / personal possessions etc. If you create, sew, bake, stitch, screen, record, press, print any sort of new item for sale - you must wait till AFTER nov 23rd. This is to ensure the Flea Market remains "A Flea Market" vs A "Craft Fair" (which we are working on!) . Tricksters we are keeping track of this - and if we find that you are selling new scarves and registered before the 14th - we will kick 'ya out! The same applies for record stores, record labels and distros. THE FIRST REGISTRATION PERIOD IF FOR INDIVIDUALS SELLING THEIR OLD STUFF ONLY

2) This year we are cutting back on the # of tables to allow more room for people to browse. Therefore table prices are going to increase to $60 for a full table (still not to shabby - again 2500+ people came through the door last year). Half tables will be $37.

3) We are ONLY allowing reservations to be made online (we are no longer doing in person "tickets") - it was just way to confusing to keep track and created the biggest most confusing mess ever. Sorry!

4) We are going to post an online pdf and jpg for you to repost and distribute around to help get word out about the event

Thanks for registering and we appreciate your support ! Get excited !

New All Ages Friendly Venue Opens !

Well I dont think NOFX will be playing there anytime soon, but The Barbary is opening under new management and ownership. One of the owners happens to be our longtime friend John Redden who used to help us out overe here at R5.

The new Barbary will primarily operating as a 21+ bar/venue (sort of like old Silk City) but knowing how important all ages shows are to the Philadelphia area - they are going to open it up to us for some smaller all ages shows. Located in the Fishtown section of the city - only a block away from Johnny Brendas (which means its only two blocks away from the Girard El stop!)

Usually shows will take place from 7 to 10:30ish. The details are still being ironed out but look for some all ages (and 21+) shows in early 2008.

For now you can be friends with the "New Barbary" on myspace and attend their grand opening this Thursday Nov 15th with a slew of DJs and special guests.

Starlight Ballroom Temporarily Shuts Down - Justice, Stars, Between The Buried & Me, Go Team Move

Hello -
Last week there was an unfortunate incident outside of The Starlight Ballroom during a private birthday party (not an R5 event). After a group of people left the venue once it was closed - two individuals began to fight over a woman. The argument escalated and security directed the two men to leave the block. Once they were across the street and down the block (away from security and a stationed police officer) - an individual produced a handgun and shot at the man who he was arguing with.

Sgt Wilkins from the Philadelphia Polce department has made it known to us (and the media) that there was no fight inside the club, adding that" Starlight Ballroom has ample security and is not known as a trouble spot" but as a precaution the City of Philadelphia temporarily closed down the venue - to make sure that the club was not attracting violent people or creating a nuisance. There will be a private meeting later this week where venue officials (including R5) and city officials will meet to discuss what kind of events The Staright palns to host in the future.

So far the City of Philadelphia has been helpful and surprisingly easy to work with. As a pre-cautionary move - The Starlight Ballroom has agreed to hire two uniformed police officers for all future events and shows (to put all your minds at ease). We expect the venue to be reopened in two weeks.

To make sure that none of the touring bands we work with are "left out in the cold" - we have moved our upcoming shows for October to new homes.

* Sunday Oct 21st w/ Justice

Friends Helping Friends Benefit - For Robby Redcheek's Family

Our very good friend - Robby Redcheeks (famed Philadelphia Hardcore show promoter!) lost his mother to cancer a week after This Is Hardcore Fest this summer. In Robbie's words......

"The days after TIH, my mother started getting worse. That whole month my step father Charlie had been staying in the hospital with her on a cot next to her bed. He is an amazing person. He has worked 3 jobs to support the family the entire time I have known him. Hes is a great father & a great husband to say the least.

My mother struggled to raise me as a single mother. She worked whatever jobs she could get & really busted her ass to make it all work. She always wanted that "family" for us but it was just the two of us. We had a great relationship when I was growing up. We constantly joked around and laughed. She was a great mother under the circumstances.

When I turned 20 she got remarried to Charlie & his 5 kids. Then she had 2 more with him. My brothers Ryan & Sean. Charlie gave her the stable family life that she always wanted for me. I was grown at this point. But I also gained a Family. A great one at that. All my brothers and sister are amazing and we are extremely tight. No such thing as step family here. Blood doesn't dictate who your family is. This is my family and I am thankful for them all.

4AM on Aug 24th I got the call from my step father that I should rush to the hospital because they do not think shes going to make it through the night. I was there by 5AM. At 11AM she passed away. Charlie held her hand till her very last moment.

I cant explain in words what kind of man he is. Other than to say I hope that I can be as good of a husband & father as him someday.

The reason for this show is to help me and my family out during Hard Times. I ask Bands I have been friends with for years like Floorpunch, Blacklisted, Cold World, & Let Down. All the people in these bands have been good friends for a long time and we have always helped each other out time and time again over the years. I also asked bands that I am new friends that mentally helped me out During all this.

Anyway I feel like I needed to get all this out to everyone so they could understand the why. Its not just about a show, its not just about a reunion. Its about the choice we make to be HC kids, in the biggest family possible.

Thank you to every person that has written, donated, or been apart of this in anyway"

The Dillinger Escape Plan & Pipettes Postpone Tour

What do these two bands have in common ? Not much ? Except that they have both postponed their shows at The First Unitarian Church in October.

The Pipettes have been having some VISA issues and wont be able to make it over to the country in time. We are working on a new date for mid-november, we'll keep you updated. To make things easy - if you already purchased a ticket - we will refund you the full amount (when the new date is announced you can purchase a new ticket)

The Dillinger Escape Plan do not have VISA issues - but some foot ones. Their guitarist Ben injured himself doing some crazy ass guitar playing stuff on a video shoot - new dates are being worked on right now...We are also shooting for mid-November. Since the new date is not set in stone - we are refunding all tickets. When the new show is announced - simply buy tickets for the new date.

If you have any questions get in touch.......

Since 2004 we have used the same "program" (it's actually a server) to deliver this newsletter to you and even back then it was out of date and quite. Lately it's been causing all sorts of problems and we have grown sick and tired of it (especially because it attaches that weird little file every time) . So out with the old and in with new...

So again PLEASE CLICK ON THE "GET ON THE NEW MAILING LIST LINK" and enter in your e-mail address. We will then send you a confirm your subscription link to your e-mail address (to make sure it is really you) . Click on that and you are good to go!

GOSSIP / LONG BLONDES CANCEL FALL TOUR

(stolen from Pitchfork)

did you read that Rick Rubin story in the New York Times Sunday Magazine last week? (If not, we recommend doing so.) Near the end, Rubin, the president of The Gossip's current label, Columbia, drops this interesting tidbit of information:

"'I saw [the Gossip] at the Troubadour, and they blew my mind'," [Rick Rubin] said. 'It was the best show I've seen in five years. Afterward, I met with the band. They felt stressed, and they were having trouble writing songs. The energy in the room when they were performing was so intense, and I'm not even sure how we'd get it to feel like that in the studio. So we decided to record a live show during their European tour, and we're going to release a DVD of the live album as their first release.'"

That live album and DVD, originally scheduled to be released on November 16, has been pushed back. So apparently, they pushed back the tour in support of it too.

Hmm. One would think that touring is a good way of drumming up excitement for a live album, no matter when the shows take place, but hey, we ain't gonna argue with Rick Rubin.

The Gossip have told us theyll be back in "The Spring of 2008"

One piece of good news here is that The Long Blondes posted on their Myspace page that instead of touring, "We will in fact be spending October and November recording our second album."
