Fall mania! 15 new shows. Let’s get right to it.

Two big big massive shows to start off with : ANIMAL COLLECTIVE are coming to play Union Transfer on October 28th. Who know what’s in store for the fall, but taking a look at recent shows they have been playing a wide array of songs covering their expansive catalog. DAN DEACON opens the show and will make everyone do weird things. We expect this to sellout mega quick. Get rich and buy a bunch of tickets to sell on craigslist. Tickets on-sale FRIDAY!

Remember when we had THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN play a basement with From Ashes Rise? Of course you dont. Shows were much better than but now they are way cleaner and sound much better. For those who are not familiar, Dismemberment Plan were/are pretty great. Talking-Heads-style vocals, layers of soaring (and non-annoying) keyboards anchored by Gang of Four-style angular choppy guitars underlined with a dub-via-punk style bass (think Fugazi). They once received a “10.0” from Pitchfork. I hate that I just typed that. They’ll be at Union Transfer, November 3rd. This will also sell way quick. Tickets on-sale tomorrow at noon.

Our brand new South Philly venue, THE BOOT & SADDLE is just a few weeks away from opening. We just added shows there for the world’s greatest oi band HARD SKIN (Sept 13th), the world’s greatest entertainer aka HAR MAR SUPERSTAR (Oct 1st), Elephant Six’s very weird psychedelic group ELF POWER (Oct 6th) and the indie rock ex-husband and wife duo QUASI aka Janet Weiss from Sleater Kinney and Wild Flag + Sam Coomes from Heatmiser. If you know who those people are, congratulations, you are old.

Lot’s of people forget that we still do shows at The Church and they are awesome and fun. It should be a wild night when California scuzz rock dudes WAVVES play with glam pop acid psych outfit KING TUFF on October 2nd. Longtime R5 favorite THE BLOW aka visual and performance artist Khaela Maricich is coming back to the church, November 9th. This time with a new record (it’s been seven years since the last one!) on K Records. Heartfelt and slightly sassy minimal pop type stuff. We likey.

If you are into bands that wear surgeon masks on stage, you are the most excited that Liverpool’s CLINIC are coming back to Johnny Brendas on September 17th. Driving, hectic drums, sinister vocals, moogs, and melodica weave a sonic landscape of dance-y smartness, or smarty dance-ness?

In the guys from other bands category doing their solo project category : TIM KASHER from CURSIVE and THE GOOD LIFE plays Johnny Brendas on November 9th. We have been doing shows for him for over thirteen years now. Ugh, this newsletter is making me feel the oldest. NAT BALDWIN from THE DIRTY PROJECTORS plays the tiny side chapel room of The First Unitarian Church On October 2nd.

And for the 6000th time : We have two afterparties for this weekend’s MAD DECENT BLOCK PARTY.  For the youngsters, DIPLO, BLAQSTARR and DIRTY SOUTH JOE will be at Sound Garden Hall. We keep things outside at Morgan’s Pier with NADASTROM, DJ SLIINK and SWIZZYMACK (and it’s only $5). It’s going to be a long day / night on Saturday July 27th.

Lots more shows next week for you!
